SPOILER ALERT! Sort of. Even though I heavily changed or just straight made up large chunks of this campaign’s story, players who plan to play in the Salvage setting might learn a few canon details that their GM wouldn’t necessarily want their characters to know.
Victorious after the tough battle against Steel Punch, the party investigates the Dusters’ vehicles and discover that two of them have an identical decal but the third vehicle belongs to a different criminal organization — “Mod Fathers” — and also has an impressive cannon attached to it. Cam tries to find out more information from the vehicle’s computer but fails to hack it. At the same time, Ho’led’s keen senses alert him that the wind has changed. He looks to the horizon and detects a huge sandstorm approaching them from the east — they would have to hurry back to Petra, before the storm hits them.
Cam manages to reverse engineer the Onai Robot’s communications system so it will serve as a locator for the spacecraft, and then they set off back to Petra. It turns out they misjudged the speed of the Dusters’ vehicles, and the edge of the storm hits them, with only a valiant joint effort by Ashok and Ho’led, barely managing to keep the car from overturning.
Full of sand, tired and hungry, they return to Petra as the two suns set on the horizon. Before they enter the city they hide all of the Onai gear they found, and decide that the only contact they can trust now is Dave Thompson (the low-level politician). They leave Ashok at his house, sharing with him the Scraps they have found and letting him hold the rest for later trade.
They arrive after dark to Dave’s office, which is sitting behind his desk and occupied with devouring his dinner — but when they present a small amount of the Biolumicron substance (about a tenth of the total amount they found) his eyes sparkle with excitement, he hugs them and ruhes out to his vehicle, dragging them all behind him. On the way there Jericho talks to Dave about his vision for humanity and omega – he asks Dave to fund a research mission to the equator where they think they will find salvation. He further argues that everyone should unite together to provide a better future for the residents of Omega. Dave is completely bewildered, and asks several times if Jericho intends to help people for free? Jericho insists he is sincere. When they arrive at Freebrain’s Hazard Pit Arena, Dave confers with Ho’led to see if Jericho has gone mad. Ho’led grins and says that Jericho really believes in it and that maybe Dave should take heed of his vision.
They get out of the car and get on a rickety elevator, reaching the roof floor of the Hazard Pit. During the elevator ride, Dave watches Jericho intently and seems heavily contemplating with himself. As they get out of the elevator, Dave looks like a person reborn.
The structure’s roof is connected to another structure with a long steel bridge going over the arena itself, in which several dusters are currently fighting a giant desert centipede. They cross the bridge — on the other side there is a club where Freebrain hosts what looks like an evening party. Dave enters and approaches Freebrain, shows him the Biolumicron test tube and converses with him in a whisper as he points at the characters. Freebrian gestures at them and they approach him. He asks where did they get the Biolumicron, but they elegantly dodge the line of questioning and only tell that they found it on an Onai robot that Ho’led found in the desert. Freebrain reacts with restrained rage, saying that if they do not trust him, then he will not trust them, and instructs his men to escort them out. But before they head across the bridge, Dave talks to Freebrain and he again calls them back to the table — where he offers to fund their next expedition if they cooperate with him.
He asks them if they know about the material they found, and they answer no. Freebrain points to the substance and says that only a few months ago they found it for the first time, and only with the help of a Valkyrie scientist named Su-chi did they crack the secret — a powerful energy source that even the small amount the party found would be enough to satisfy all of Petra’s energy needs for months.
The place where Freebrain’s people found the Biolumicron is the well-preserved Onai ruins north of Petra, where scans show a much larger amount of Biolumicron — but the location is guarded by an army of Onai sentinel robots. Only a few survived the expeditions that Freebrain previously sent there.
Freebrain suggests to the characters that if they agree to this and reveal their secrets, he will fund their expedition there. The characters do not give him an answer on the spot, though they agree that the place Freebrain described is not one of the places they saw in the spacecraft. After another round of drinking they depart for the night, but just before crossing the bridge, Freebrain’s guards suddenly shout out — but not at the characters, but at a group of assailants — goons from the Mod-Father gang break in through the windows and start firing in all directions. The characters retreat quickly but not before Cam takes Dave with them. In the middle of the bridge Jericho stops them and wonders aloud if they should not check who is winning — if Freebrain survives, he should not think that they are cowards. They approach the fighting zone once again, where the Mod-Fathers hand appears to be on top.
Their hesitance is interrupted when Freebrain appears at the door near them, guns in his hands roaring loudly as bullets fly towards the Mod-Fathers’ goons. He shouts at the group to retreat and go to Su-chi at Valkyrie.
They comply and begin to run down the bridge, when a sonic grenade lands behind them, causing the bridge to shake and sending Ho’led and Cam tumbling down towards the arena. They barely cling to the edge of the bridge, as Jericho pulls them up to safety using a rope he had with him.
They find a safe haven at Ashok’s hut, and the next morning they make their way to Valkyrie.
Once they get there Jericho happily leads them to his home, so that they can meet his wife and children – but instead of the warm welcome they expected, Jericho gets restrained rage and anger from his wife for leaving them for such a long time. Jericho mumbles in response, and Cam, not understanding the strange human interaction, lies on the couch and wonders out loud to Jericho “I thought you said she was cool man!”
After the winds calm down, Jericho reveals to his wife about what they have discovered and specifically about the third and menacing sun. She says they should consult with the famous astronomer Richard.
They arrive at his observatory, where they are stunned as he confesses to them that he has already discovered the third sun several months ago, but did not think anyone would believe him! He says that according to his calculations, there are three months left until the third sun reaches omega.
