SPOILER ALERT! Sort of. Even though I heavily changed or just straight made up large chunks of this campaign’s story, players who plan to play in the Salvage setting might learn a few canon details that their GM wouldn’t necessarily want their characters to know.

  • Salvage: Genesys Sci-Fi Junkpunk Setting - Fantasy Flight Games | Genesys Foundry

Scorching sand hot enough to melt tires. Homicidal alien robots. Wondrous relics buried beneath mountains of junk. It’s all part of life on Omega, the last planet anyone would want to call home. Unfortunately, you don’t have a choice. What life will you salvage from the wreckage? Will you hunt down rusting mechanical monsters? Salvage valuable scrap from the wrecked starships of your ancestors? Discover mysterious technology within timeworn alien ruins? How will you build your destiny in this dangerous land?

Everyone gathers together and enter the hall inside which are the six cryogenic compartments of the Onai. On closer inspection it seems that the thousands of years that has passed since they entered the pods has caused severe deterioration to the equipment. In fact, only one of the six pods appears to still be active, while the other five have malfunctioned. Ho’led and Cam curiously investigate the last active freezing pod, with Cam even managing to crack the computer code and identify who was frozen — These six are all scientists and engineers responsible for constructing the portal through which the Onai marched to escape the impending doom. The only still living Onai is the lead scientist who invented the portal technology, named Caucho. Cam checks the computer console as to why they did not leave along with the rest of their race — it seems they stayed behind to keep the machine working. With a gut feeling, Cam also tries to figure out if any of the Onai that went through the portal ever came back, but to his surprise, the information appears as classified under heavy alien encryption.
Ho’led suggests they should open the freezing pod: “What can the Onai do to us? Four of us, armed and ready and he is just a scientist.” Cam joins him and only Jericho resists, fearing that even a lone Onai could activate unknown defense systems and possibly cause further damage. Despite this, Ho’led and Cam insist and Jericho finally relents, but in turn convinces them to first be ready for a quick evacuation.

They walk to the illuminated corridor, where they see what they were looking for — a tank almost full to the brim with Biolumicron, the miraculous source of energy of the Onai. While immersed in thought of how to disassemble it, a strange alarm erupts from the main computer terminal in the room. Cam looks up the computer console and detects with security cameras the armed convoy approaching the gates of the complex, and manages to activate the defense systems: Sentry Robots stand fast in front of the approaching humans, who according to the marking on their vehicles belong to the rival gang of the Mod Fathers. It looks like the battle is imminent.
Ho’led manages to dismantle one of the empty containers of the Biolumicron, and together with the help of Uncle Oscar and Cam they transfer most of the Biolumicron to the new container, ready for transport. At this time, Tanya enters the room, having spotted the convoy approaching from her lookout spot. Tanya and Uncle Oscar drag the Biolumicron container out with them, as the battle between the Rusters and the armed convoy begins outside the gates of the complex.

Salvage session 5 cover 04

Jericho, Ho’led and Cam return to the cryogenic pod of Caucho, the Onai that designed this marvelous facility. Jericho suggests that he first scans Caucho with his psychic ability to check whether he is still fully alive, and only then will they open the cell. “This way I am only risking myself.”
Jericho puts his hands on the sides of the freezing chamber, concentrates and begins to scan Caucho’s brain. He discovers to his amazement that Caucho is alert and recognizes Jericho’s presence! Jericho makes efforts to hide from the presence of the Onai, that for some unknown reason scares Jericho into the depths of his soul. This requires all the psychic power at his disposal, and fortunately, Caucho doesn’t seem to be at the height of his power. Eventually, Jericho manages to penetrate the Onai’s mind without it being able to notice. Caucho’s strange memories reveal that the life of the Onai was not much different from the life of humans. Caucho was a promising scientist who was part of the task force chosen to deal with the threat of the menacing third sun, something to which he devoted his life, even at the cost of sacrificing his social and family life. He invented the Rift Portal and led the team that built the device, and convinced the population that it was their only option of being saved from annihilation.
As Jericho continues to dive into Caucho’s consciousness, he begins to discover disturbing things – it seems that Caucho and his men were not sure where the rupture in reality was leading to exactly. Although they announced that the gate would lead them to another planet, it seems that it was transferring them to another time and dimension as well! This is why no Onai has ever come back, as such. Worse yet, Caucho was aware that in the transition, the Onai will perhaps preserve some of their genetic structure, but will become a completely different creature — the Oilers! Despite this, Caucho hid the information from his race and sent them to a crueler fate than death, believing that it would be better for them to survive in some form than their complete destruction.
Jericho is shocked by the discovery, barely managing to detach his consciousness from Caucho’s, and falls back completely exhausted. After regaining some of his strength, he shares his findings with Cam and Ho’led and together they decide to destroy Caucho’s freezer. But as Cam attempts to shut down the mechanism that activates the cell, an anti-failure system comes to life, and the cell begins to thaw Caucho! As the pod’s door begin to open, Ho’led does not hesitate and throws in a sonic grenade, and immediately pushes the door close again. A muffled explosion is heard from inside the cell with Onai remains splatting all over the glass within. Before they leave the place, Cam collects several samples of the Onai’s remains.

While the group were discovering the fate of the Onai, the Rusters guarding the complex managed to defeat the attacking humans, with suriviors falling back, but the victory did not come easily and over half of the Rusters were hit in battle and as many were killed from the Mod Fathers gang.

They all make their way back to Uncle Oscar’s cabin with the Biolumicron, but as they approach they detect a number of Mod Fathers vehicles, also going up the slope and making their way to the cabin. The characters realize that they will not be able to hide the cabin and while debating what to do Oscar approaches them enthusiastically and shows them the empty device that perfectly fits the Biolumicron tank – it activates the cabin which can move — it is in fact an ancient Onai vessel that Oscar has made his home and can actually become a sort of air ship! Oscar, with the help of Ho’led and Cam, rushes to install the Biolumicron in the cabin. Oscar then turns on a device that inflates a make-shift hot air balloon attached to the roof of the cabin/vessel. Tanya and Jericho begin to dismantle the steel supports that secure the cabin to the ground.
As they prepare the cabin for takeoff, the vehicles of the Mad Dogs rush towards them, then stop far enough away that the cannons mounted on two of the vehicles can hit the cabin but too far for light weapons to hit them. The gang leader announces to the characters to surrender and hand over all the Biolumicron they have. Cam answers him using a megaphone, claiming they do not know what Biolumicron is — but Cam’s deception is not bought by anyone, and the gang members begin to arm their cannons. Tanya and Jericho struggle with the last two support beams securing the cabin to the ground. All the while, Ho’led and Oscar turn on and go over the cabins’ flight systems, but then the heavy cannons start to fire — and the cabin gets damaged and starts to catch fire!

Tanya and Jericho finally manage to release the last supporters and leap to put out the fire. At the same time Ho’led pulls out his alien heavy rifle and shoots at one of the cannon-bearing vehicles, succeeding in hitting the driver causing the vehicle to lose control and crash on the rocks. The second cannon continues to thunder and strikes the inflating hot air balloon — the air begins to escape from it! Cam quickly makes his way to the roof to repair the balloon while Oscar activates the cabin systems. The cabin begins to change shape and take off to the air, rushing away from the angry mob below.
